Smart Design & Build were appointed to deliver the restoration and redevelopment of the historic Mistley Post Office building, now reintegrated into The Mistley Thorn. Originally divided in 1840, the property has been reunited, with works focused on preserving its heritage while creating practical hospitality spaces for modern use.

The ground floor has been reconfigured to improve flow between the dining room, lounge, and a new bar area positioned at the rear of the building, overlooking the enclosed walled terrace. These changes enhance both guest experience and operational efficiency.

Upper floor works are adding four new guest bedrooms, including two with views across the River Stour, increasing accommodation capacity and long term commercial value.

The project also included the creation of The Postie bar, launched in December and now open daily from 10am, serving drinks, cocktails, wine, beer, and homemade food.

This project reflects Smart Design & Build’s experience in heritage restoration, hospitality design, and commercial redevelopment, securing the future of a coaching inn that has served guests since 1723.
